ROOTCODE
Original linocut, hand printed on fabric
280 × 65 cm
One-of-a-kind artwork
Rootcode explores the hidden structures that connect living systems: roots, branches and the networks that exist beneath the visible surface of a forest.
Rootcode was created from two impressions of Habitat, an award-winning linocut that received the BA Print Prize 2024 in Bath and was subsequently selected for Wells Art Contemporary 2025 and the RWA Annual Open Exhibition 2025.
By repeating and reversing the original image, Rootcode transforms Habitat into a new, continuous structure. At its centre, the intertwined forms unexpectedly create a DNA double-helix-like rhythm, extending the original work’s exploration of natural networks into ideas of biological connection, inheritance and continuity.
Rather than depicting the forest as a collection of individual trees, Rootcode considers it as a living network: interconnected, layered and constantly exchanging information, matter and energy.
At 2.8 metres high, the work has a strong architectural presence while retaining the softness and movement of fabric. Suspended vertically, it introduces the complexity and rhythm of the natural world into an interior, creating a connection between the built environment and the forest beyond it.
Its monochrome palette works particularly well in contemporary, minimalist and natural interiors, where the scale of the piece can become a quiet but commanding focal point.
Each impression has been hand printed on fabric, retaining the subtle irregularities and physical traces characteristic of traditional relief printing.
The panel is finished with two wooden magnetic hanging rails, at the top and bottom, and is supplied ready to hang.
