Artist’s Book by Aga Kubish, 2023
Lifeline is a meditation on continuity, fragility, and the invisible threads that hold life together. A single line travels across the concertina pages, shifting in density and form — sometimes steady, sometimes tangled — like the unpredictable pulse of experience.
The book’s structure draws on the tradition of the leporello, allowing it to be read as an intimate sequence or expanded into a sculptural, three-dimensional presence. When displayed fully extended, Lifeline becomes an unbroken visual journey, evoking ancient scrolls, botanical diagrams, or topographical maps.
Created with ink, water-based pigments, and hand-drawn mark-making on textured paper, the work merges minimalist repetition with organic imperfection. The earthy stains and delicate linework suggest both the precision of a seismograph and the looseness of a drifting current.
Bound in a floral-patterned cover, Lifeline also nods quietly to the decorative arts — a reminder that beauty can be both intricate and understated, like the paths we trace through time.
