About the Workshop

Join artist printmaker Aga Kubish for a unique opportunity to print from Habitat - a large-scale linocut that received the Bath Print Prize and has been exhibited across the UK.

Each participant will produce four unique A3 prints, selecting their own sections from the larger image.

During the workshop you will learn:

  • How to prepare and ink a large linocut block
  • How to achieve an even layer of ink using professional rollers
  • How to print by hand using a traditional burnishing method with a glass jar
  • How different papers affect the final image
  • How pressure, rhythm and touch influence the printmaking process

We will print on a variety of papers, from lightweight Lokta papers to professional Somerset printmaking paper.

About Habitat

During the workshop, Aga will share the story behind Habitat - one of her largest and most recognised linocuts.

Participants will gain insight into the development of the work, from the original photographic reference and initial concept, through image planning and composition, to the carving and printing of the final block.

Aga will discuss the practical and creative decisions involved in translating a photographic image into a large-scale relief print, as well as the challenges of carving and hand-printing a block of this size.

This workshop focuses entirely on the printing process itself. Participants will work from the original linocut block, learning how large relief prints can be created entirely by hand.

Slow Craft in a Fast World

Hand-printing is a slower and more physical approach to image-making. The process requires patience, attention and direct engagement with the materials.

At a time when technology allows images to be created instantly, traditional printmaking offers something different: a tactile experience rooted in touch, repetition and craftsmanship. The rhythmic act of inking and burnishing becomes almost meditative, creating space for focus, observation and a deeper connection with the making process.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is designed for artists, printmakers and creative practitioners who already have some experience with relief printmaking and would like to deepen their understanding of the printing process.

Rather than focusing on carving techniques or beginner-level introductions, the workshop explores the practical and physical aspects of hand-printing large linocut blocks, including inking, paper selection, pressure control and achieving consistent print quality.

Participants will leave with four original A3 prints and an insight into the techniques behind large-scale hand-printed linocuts.
