Course Overview:
This 5-week course, hosted by artist and printmaker Aga Kubish, will guide you through the process of creating a one-colour, minimum A3-sized linocut print. Whether you prefer to work from a reference photo or from your imagination, you’ll learn essential techniques for bringing your designs to life through texture, pattern, and expert cutting methods. Prints will be created by hand and with a press, offering you the opportunity to experiment with both traditional and modern techniques.
What to Expect:
• In-depth guidance on transferring your designs onto lino blocks
• Exploration of texture, patterns, and light manipulation using innovative dot and hatching techniques
• Personalised, one-on-one tutoring to help refine your cutting skills and artistic vision
• A creative and supportive environment in Aga Kubish’s inspiring studio
Key Focus:
The course places a special emphasis on intricate dot work, where you will learn how to use a needle to create stunning gradients and shadows. Knowledge of light and shadow will enhance your ability to create complex designs, but don’t worry – we’ll cover the essentials as part of the learning process.
Course Breakdown:
Week 1: Transferring Your Design
We’ll begin by transferring your sketch onto the lino block, using either a reference image or your own creative drawing. Aga will guide you through the process of building layers and planning the textures and patterns for your final piece.
Week 2: Cutting the Lino
This week, you’ll start cutting into your lino block, focusing first on the lightest areas and gradually working towards the darker ones. You’ll also learn about the different types of cutters and how to use them effectively.
Week 3: Patterns, Textures, and Dot Work
Here, we dive deeper into creating textures. Aga will introduce you to the dot technique and show you how to use lines, cross-hatching, and other methods to build shades and depth in your work.
Week 4: Finalising the Cutting
During this session, you’ll continue cutting and refining your design, with close support and feedback to perfect your linocut before we move on to printing.
Week 5: Printing
It’s printing time! Aga will demonstrate how to hand-print using a simple barren (which can even be made using a glass jar) and how to work with two types of paper – one for hand printing and one for the press. You’ll finish the session with your own set of prints, ready to showcase.
This course offers a wonderful opportunity to expand your printmaking skills in an intimate and focused setting, with expert guidance from Aga Kubish. Whether you’re looking to hone your craft or experiment with new techniques, you’ll leave with valuable insights and a stunning piece of art.
